TORCHED! 2022
IN PERSON – May 19 to June 12, 2022 in THE BRONX – Pregones/PRTT’s musical theater play based on real stories of the fabled Bronx fires of the 1970s set to the rhythms of Salsa, Disco-Funk, and Hip-Hop. — GET TICKETS NOW!
Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater (aka Pregones/PRTT) is a multigenerational performing ensemble, multidiscipline arts presenter, and owner/steward of bilingual arts facilities in The Bronx and Manhattan. Our mission is to champion a Puerto Rican/Latino cultural legacy of universal value through creation and performance of original plays and musicals, exchange and partnership with other artists of merit, and engagement of diverse audiences.
Pregones was founded in 1979 when a group of artists led by Rosalba Rolón set out to create new works in the style of Caribbean and Latin American “colectivos” or performing ensembles. Soon established as a Bronx resident company with a home season, Pregones remains in the vanguard of an arts renaissance radiating throughout and beyond The Bronx. Spurred by stage and film icon Miriam Colón, PRTT was founded in 1967 as one of the first bilingual theater companies in all of the U.S. It is credited for nurturing the development of hundreds of Latino artists, legitimating cultural connections throughout the Spanish-speaking world, and pioneering models for community engagement. Following merger in 2014, our New York City season plays a decisive role in empowering underrepresented artists and audiences to claim their rightful place at the front of the American theater.
PREGONES THEATER in The Bronx harbors a comfortable 130-seat theater, a spacious lobby and gallery presenting up to four visual arts exhibitions each year, a stellar glass mosaic mural by world-renowned artist Manny Vega, and an outdoors garden maintained in collaboration with local residents. Inaugurated in 2005 at a total cost of $3.7M, the facility is wheelchair accessible and optimally equipped with lighting, sound, digital scenery and media projection, infrared assistive listening, telepresence/live streaming technology, and a Steinway & Sons grand piano. Pregones is the only standalone theater in The Bronx not affiliated to an institution of higher learning, and proud anchor of the evolving South Bronx cultural corridor.
PUERTO RICAN TRAVELING THEATER in Manhattan harbors a 190-seat playhouse, a large multi-use studio lined with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, connecting artist workrooms, and a jewel box display of founder Miriam Colón’s career awards and collectibles. Opened in 1977 as one of the first homes of bilingual theater in all of the U.S., the facility is the outcome of the visionary and multimillion-dollar repurposing of then abandoned New York City Firehouse No. 54. The building’s landmarked red brick and cast-iron façade, designed by 19th Century master Napoleon LeBrun, is now synonymous with PRTT. Home of new and standout plays and musicals for five decades, PRTT remains the foremost Latino theater in the Times Square/Broadway district today.
