Creating Connections: Latina artists on the move!
Dancing to the beat of NYC, six artists explore the Caribbean/Latina-American experience through dance and performance.
[tab: ABOUT]
Following a collaborative process, this multi-media event pays tribute to the original troupe of dancers/choreographers who crafted the dance/theater piece Out of La Negrura in 2004, while folding in a new generation of dance artists into the project.
The dance concert features a 40-minute documentary film of interviews and clips from the original collaborative dance theater work, with live performances by Sita Frederick, Ana “Rokafella” Garcia and Marion Ramirez along with up-&-coming artists: Beatrice Capote, Odylle “Bgirl Mantis”Beder and Jadele McPherson.

About OUT OF LA NEGRURA
Choreographed and directed collaboratively by Sita Frederick, Anita “Rokafella” Garcia and Marion Ramirez, Out of La Negrura was first performed at the Huntington Summer Arts Festival (2004) and included Awilda Sterling-Duprey, and was later developed in residencies at Temple University (2005) and Cornell University (2006) before its first showing at Pregones Theater, May 2006. This first showing was also aided by residencies at Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center and at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. In 2006, Mildred Ruiz, of the acclaimed poetry theater ensemble Universes, was the directorial consultant.
Out of La Negrura explores Caribbean/Latina-American experience through dance. This collaborative dance theater project began literally from a dream of Bessie-award winning choreographer Merian Soto. As co-founder of Pepatian and curator of many performance projects during the history of the organization, Soto had long-carried the idea for a project that would bring Latina women together to create a spiritual reinvigoration of their connections with African ancestry.
