Beyond Workshop Series SPRING 2019

Pre-Professional Performing Arts Training

Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater is pleased to announce its second year partnership with R.Evolución Latina for realization of the Raúl Juliá Training Unit (RJTU) in conjunction with the Beyond Workshop Series (BWS). The program is an interdisciplinary performing arts training workshop at the pre-professional level, and is imparted by seasoned theater professionals with Broadway, Off-Broadway, Off-Off Broadway, film and television credits.

This year’s acting, dance, and music curriculum shines a spotlight on William Shakespeare’s enduring and universal classic, The Tempest. The Bard of Avon’s heightened language meets the rich sonority and rhythms of Latinx cultures, and training artists get to bring their full selves to bear on the story’s comedy, drama, betrayal, and magic. Workshops culminate in public performances of the classic play at Pregones Theater in The Bronx.

The bilingual English/Spanish program is offered free of charge to participants. Online application and in-person audition are both required. Space is limited and application does not guarantee enrollment. Determinations are made by the program’s artistic leadership. We seek applicants with the passion and discipline required for intensive training, and who feel strongly about giving back through their art.

For Pregones/PRTT and R.Evolución Latina, the joint run of the RJTU and BWS in 2019 is a way to magnify the impact of each of our missions, and to honor the memory and legacy of Miriam Colón (1936-2017) and Raúl Juliá (1940-1994), two titans who helped pave the way for all Latinx artists today. The partnership builds on the strengths of last year’s joint run, and raises the bar with new and welcome creative challenges.

Luis Salgado, Artistic Director of R.Evolución Latina, says “I believe that last year’s Shakespearean Experience was a fantastic step forward in our mission to empower our community of Latin artists from all around the world. The Tempest is a new ambitious goal of evolution for R.Evolución Latina in relationship to classical work done in our own ‘dare to go beyond’ style. Artists are challenged, not only in the physical work, and the use of the Shakespearean language but also in connection to the social and political realities of today. Prospero (the antagonist) represents those in society who try to trick us into the eye of the storm, our work represents how we take actions to survive and come our triumphant.”

Rosalba Rolón, Artistic Director of Pregones/PRTT, adds that “Our goal with the Raúl Juliá Training Unit is to provide performing arts training of a high caliber to individuals with limited or no access to such education. Partnership with R.Evolución Latina and BWS does just this: Together we build community with local and international participants, readying them to pursue careers in the arts with enhanced confidence.”
