A Mainstage Production of Pregones/PRTT

World Premiere!

Written and Directed by Jorge B. Merced
Featuring Music by Johnny Rodríguez
Arrangements by Ricardo Pons and Desmar Guevara
Musical Direction by Desmar Guevara

Pregones/PRTT’s Parrots at the Pagoda is a drag origins story inspired by the life and times of JOHNNY RODRÍGUEZ (1912-1997), standout vocalist and prolific trios musician, pioneering female impersonator and impresario, owner of legendary El Cotorrito club in Puerto Rico, and brother to the also legendary Tito “El Inolvidable” Rodríguez. Prepare to be transported into his world, rife with vibrant costumes and timeless songs, every element crafted to immerse you in the journey of this queer trailblazer and all-around icon.

“The great Johnny Rodríguez had a stellar career spanning five decades, from the 1930s well into the 1980s, often trailblazing in form and content,” says writer and director Jorge B. Merced. “He was at various times a boxer, social activist, music star, director of a touring revue of female impersonators, and owner of genderbending in-spot El Cotorrito (The Little Parrot) in San Juan. For this World Premiere, our performing ensemble draws from Rodríguez’s catalogue of over 200 original songs! I hand-selected fifteen especially poignant, smart, sometimes tongue-twisting lyrics to anchor a joyously unorthodox ‘bio-musical’ as told by a crew of flamboyant and chattering parrots sometime after the end of this world…”

The cast of Parrots at the Pagoda will include Fernando Contreras (Bruise & Thorn) as Jongo, Bryan J. Cortés (New York, New York) as Jóngolo/Dance Captain, Samy Figaredo (“The Other Two”) as Júngulu, Rubén Flores (¡Americano!) as Johnny, Khalid Rivera (“Russian Doll”) as Jínguili, Ansi A. Rodriguez (Red Sky) as Jungu and Sebastian Treviño (On Your Feet! National Tour) as Tito. Jorge Donoso (At the Wedding) will be the on-stage Swing.

Parrots at the Pagoda will feature set design by Gerardo Díaz Sánchez (El Huracán), lighting design by Emmanuel Delgado (Honey & Leon), costume design by Harry Nadal (Laughs in Spanish), and sound design by Eduardo Lalo Reséndiz (Los Soles Truncos). Choreography is by Veraalba Santa (The Desire of the Astronaut) and Jessica Moya (the beautiful land i seek) is the Production Manager. Majo Ferrucho (In the Heights) will serve as Production Stage Manager, with Brianna Guillén (The Divining: Ceremonies from in The Name of the M/other Tree) as Assistant Stage Manager. Casting is by Bass/Valle Casting.

ABOUT JOHNNY: Johnny Rodriguez was a Puerto Rican singer and composer, and one of the pioneers of radio in Puerto Rico. Many consider him to be the precursor of trio music in the island. At the pinnacle of his career, Johnny was possibly the highest-paid Latin artist in New York City, the first to have a radio spot on the CBS network and the first Puerto Rican artist to appear on North American television.

Regardless of his extensive career, for some he is merely iconic singer Tito Rodriguez’s older brother. But for many he is also dearly known for being the regent of El Cotorrito, the nightclub dedicated to cross-dressing that he founded in 1960. He is also regarded as one of the first drag artists in Puerto Rico.

ABOUT TITO: Tito Rodríguez was a Puerto Rican singer and bandleader often regarded as one of the pioneers of Latin music in the United States. He started his career singing under the tutelage of his brother, Johnny Rodríguez. In the 1940s, both moved to New York, where Tito worked as a percussionist in several popular rhumba ensembles, before directing his own group to great success during the 1950s. His most prolific years coincided with the peak of the mambo and cha-cha-cha dance craze. He also recorded boleros, sones, guarachas and pachangas. Rodríguez is known by many fans as “El Inolvidable” (The Unforgettable One), a moniker based on one of his most popular songs, a bolero written by Cuban composer Julio Gutiérrez. In New York while performing with the orchestra of José Curbelo at the China Doll Cabaret, Tito met a young Japanese chorus girl by the name of Tobi Kei (b. Takeko Kunimatsu), who eventually became his wife.

ABOUT THE PAGODA: When Tito Rodríguez returned to Puerto Rico in 1966, he commissioned a Japanese-style house in Ocean Park, Santurce, for his wife and family. While living there, he launched some of his most memorable projects, such as his own television show called “El Show de Tito Rodríguez”. Among the guest stars that appeared on his show were Sammy Davis, Jr., Tony Bennett, Shirley Bassey, Roberto Clemente and Orlando Cepeda. Tito’s Pagoda became a staple of local culture as well as a testimony of his love for his wife and his island.
