¡GAYTINO! is a remarkable life journey from 1950s East LA to New York’s Great White Way in the 60s and 70s and back to Hollywood. A gay Chicano moves from the back of the bus to the front of American pop culture in this autobiographical play with music.

The solo piece is driven by Dan’s lifelong friendship with the late Chicano artist Carlos Almaraz and by Dan’s father, Chicano music legend, Lalo Guerrero. The 90-minute performance travels through decades of Mexican-American history and the gay experience from a unique and personal perspective. Touching, provocative, hilarious and absolutely one-of-a-kind, Dan Guerrero brings his two fascinating worlds together in a riveting solo show.

Lalo Guerrero – The Original Chicano

A Documentary Film
Wednesday May 6 @ 7pm – followed by a conversation with Dan Guerrero.
@Pregones Theater in The Bronx

The career and songbook of the legendary “Father of Chicano Music” guide the viewer through seven decades of Mexican-American/Chicano history, from Repatriation, the Zoot Suit riots and the UFW to the minifalda/mini-skirt and Chicano pride and prejudice. Guerrero captured it all in a dazzling array of musical genres including ranchers, boogie, tropical, norteño, cha-chas, mambos and beautiful boleros. Rare photographs, historic footage and music performances bring this eclectic tapestry to life.

Lalo Guerrero tells his own story on a camera as no one else could, with warmth and humor. Artists and activists influenced by the late Chicano icon share personal stories. RY COODER, CULTURE CLASH’s RICHARD MONTOYA, RIC SALINAS, and HERBERT SIGUENZA, UFW co-founder DOLORES HUERTA, LOS LOBOS’ LOUIE PEREZ AND DAVID HIDALGO, CHEECH MARIN, EDWARD JAMES OLMOS, PAUL RODRIGUEZ, LINDA RONSTADT and LUIS VALDEZ provide unique insight about the music pioneer.
