Now 38 years strong, the Playwrights Unit is currently co-directed by Mario Golden and Andreas Robertz. The annual Festival of Readings combines full readings of new works by established playwrights; readings of scenes from works in progress by emerging playwrights; and public discussions moderated by writers and other theater professionals.

Founded in 1977 by Miriam Colón, Fred Hudson, and Allen Davis III, the Playwrights Unit is one of the longest running Latino writing labs in the country, offering participants the opportunity to shape and share scripts with a live audience at various stages of development. Qualified writers, directors, literary managers, and scholars are employed to facilitate weekly peer-to-peer interactions and post-reading/post-performance discussions.
Funders of this program include The John Golden Fund, Lucille Lortel Foundation, The Shubert Foundation, and The Samuels Foundation. This program also made possible, in part, by public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the NYS Legislature; and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the NYC Council.

Bad Uncle, The Play by Rob Torres
An original urban comedy about a lost soul on a path of self-recovery who discovers the importance of family as a result of his relationship with his nephew.

Last Train to San Francisco by George E. Joshua
When is a missed train gone? The lives of two travelers, a former girlfriend, and a bartender collide at a local bar in New Orleans as Hurricane Katrina advances.

Vault by Troy Diana
In the Fall of 1939, four men from very different walks of life device a plan to better their lives by robbing Sausalito Savings and Loans’ state-of-the-art vault. What they never counted on was being locked inside it with a limited amount of air and bags full of their future staring at them. Will any of them survive to see a new day?

Movie Love and Last Tea by C. Abeydeera
Movie Love: Two geeky brothers only know about romance from what they have seen in old movies. One rainy night, a single woman who has had a bicycle injury arrives needing help.
Last Tea: A married woman responds to the personal ad of a widower. They meet for one night that is a sinfully nefarious rendezvous. NOTE: Adult themes. This reading is not suitable for children. Discussion to Follow.
