VOICES OF THE SEA (United Kingdom | Cuba, 2018, In Spanish & English, 83 min). Revealing stark realities for the poorest of rural Cubans with unique access and empathy, this is the story of a 30-something mother of four longing for a better life. The tension between wife and aging husband—one desperate to leave, the other content to stay—builds into a high stakes family drama after her brother and the couple’s neighbors escape. A co-production of American Documentary | POV and ITVS. A co-presentation with Latino Public Broadcasting. “In Voices of the Sea, [director] Kim Hopkins exposes the hypocrisy behind Cuba’s communist ideology. Hopkins follows Cuban native Mariela and her family to capture the daily struggles and anxieties of the country’s working class. Voices of the Sea doesn’t have a shortage of picturesque sunsets, skillfully framed portraits and soothing views of the seashore. Its colour palate, dominated by the shades of blue, transforms from hypnotic to precarious as the subjects unveil the tragic chronicle of innocent lives seized by the sea.” –Point of View Magazine
About Director Kim Hopkins:
Born to an American father and a British mother, Kim Hopkins is a graduate of the National Film and Television School in United Kingdom. In 1999, she directed the feature documentary Man in the Sand (BBC2), recounting the story of singer/songwriter Billy Bragg’s search for the legend Woody Guthrie. In 2002, she directed Wanted, a feature documentary funded by UK Film Council, A&E/WDR/Soros. Wanted premiered at Locarno, London and Viennale festivals, and told the story behind a suspected Native American serial killer. Kim spent a decade making television for the BBC, C4, and Discovery. In 2012, Hopkins produced, filmed and directed Hotel Folly – Folie á Deux (IDFA, Cambridge & Vilnius) for BBC Storyville, which focused on the human cost of the banking crisis. Hopkins was instrumental in the formation of the Documentary Department at Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in Cuba.
