Theater-Making and Watching Marathons!
30 Artists, 6 New 10-Minute Plays, 96 Hours to Watch!
Pregones/PRTT is proud to partner with Harlem 9 to present the fourth edition of 48 Hours in… El Bronx in new digital format on February 18-22, 2021.
A phenomenal roster of 30 Latinx theater artists gathered for an intensive theater-making marathon, creating six new plays inspired by iconic images from photographers David González, Joe Conzo, Angel Franco, Ricky Flores, Francisco Molina Reyes II, and Edwin Pagán, all members of the acclaimed South Bronx photography collective Seis del Sur. Backstory: In March 2020, when our world began shutting down due to the coronavirus, Harlem9 and Pregones/PRTT faced the difficult decision of postponing our jointly produced playmaking marathon scheduled for April. Nearly a year later, the collaboration is back on its feet in new digital format! Once again we celebrate The Bronx by digging into its histories, finding inspiration in the photographs that document them, and calling on the muses of live theater! Six new 10-minute plays were written over an immersive period of 48 hours, then rehearsed and recorded during an additional 2-day stretch. The process culminates in a 96-hour streaming event for all audiences, running from Thursday, February 18, through Monday, February 22, 2021.

Harlem 9 is a collaborative producing organization composed of a group of Black theater professionals from various backgrounds whose mission is to produce together, exploring the past, present, and future of black culture, celebrating its rich and diverse history of storytelling. Bryan E. Glover, Garlia Cornelia Jones, Eric Lockley, Jonathan McCrory, and Liberation Theatre Company (Sandra A. Daley-Sharif and Spencer Scott Barros) are the producers that comprise Harlem9. www.harlem9.org
In 2009, six accomplished Nuyorican photographers from the South Bronx met at The Center for Puerto Rican Studies during an exhibit. The connection was immediate and the six began to carve out a fitting space for their unique collective voice. Since then, this group of Bronx cultural ambassadors has continued to launch new exhibits and showcases around the globe, to great acclaim. They call themselves Seis del Sur (Six from the South) and they are: Joe Conzo, Jr., Ricky Flores, Ángel Franco, David Gonzalez, Francisco Molina Reyes II, and Edwin Pagán.
In their own words:
“We came of age photographing devastation, though we were just as attuned to the quiet moments and steady rhythms that sustained us then. Since then, we’ve grown up, moved around and seen the world. We went into journalism, labor activism, arts administration and film.”
“Through it all, we’ve kept taking pictures. And rather than let ourselves be defined by what others expect – either of us or our communities – we have turned our cameras to the things that fascinate us. But we still find our muse on the streets – even if those streets are far from the Bronx – whether it is music, art, the struggles and triumphs of daily life, or even a search for the invisible.” Seis del Sur
