Quarter Rican
First workshop production of a new Latinx comedy by Gabriel Hernández. Drawing on personal experiences, the author’s alter-ego and protagonist visits the local kids’ playground —super cute baby in tow— and ruminates on the ins and outs of parenting, mixed heritage, and invisible difference. Equal parts theater and polemic, Quarter Rican gets funny between urban and suburban, top dog and underdog, Puerto Rican flag and come what may!
Written by Gabriel Hernández. Music by Gabriel Hernández & Gabo Lugo. Directed by Jorge B. Merced.
Quarter Rican is being developed with support from Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater and its Step Up Artists In Residence initiative, established with a grant from The New York Community Trust.
Gabriel Hernández is a voiceover artist, burlesque performer, and proud member of Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater’s acting and music ensemble. Pregones/PRTT credits include El Bolero Was My Downfall, The Desire of the Astronaut, The Marchers (Los manifestantes), and Dancing In My Cockroach Killers. Other recent New York City and regional credits include El Coquí Espectacular and the Bottle of Doom (Two River Theater), La Canción (Repertorio Español), and the Drama Desk Award nominated CasablancaBox (HERE Arts Center). Gabriel hails from Hoboken, NJ, and holds two degrees from Yale University, where he met his wife Rachel. Together, they make nostalgic ’90s hip hop and curate their two-year-old son’s Instagram account. Quarter Rican is Gabriel’s second full-length play and first one-man show.
