The Embrace (1990)

In 1990, the artists of Pregones collaborated with documentary filmmaker Diana Coryat to capture a video performance of our long-running interactive forum theater project addressing HIV/AIDS. THE EMBRACE • EL ABRAZO provided hard hit Puerto Rican/Latinx communities in New York City with a bilingual platform where they could voice experiences, get facts, and build solidarity.

Moving Through Love (2010)

In the spring of 2010, a group of Latinx older adults from Erma Cava Senior Center in the South Bronx collaborated to develop, script, perform, and shoot a short film. This foray into the arts was one of Pregones/PRTT’s signature Seniors In Motion workshops. The enduring result reflects on the idea and lived experience of LOVE in all its richness.

Next up and in time for this year’s March Is Music series is CHAVELA, filmmakers Catherine Gund & Daresha Kyi’s award-winning documentary about iconic Mexican singer Chavela Vargas. The film is a captivating look at the unconventional life of the beloved performer, whose triumphant return to the stage late in life brought her international fame. Persistencia! – Máximo Colón

Now On View in THE BRONX – New exhibition curated by EN FOCO, INC. brings decades-spanning selection of works by New York-based Puerto Rican social documentary photographer Máximo Rivera Colón. The works are monuments to human solidarity, struggle, and endurance at their most frontal and intimate. Shuttling back and forth in time and place, Colón’s extraordinary photos remind us that every social good is the outcome of repetitive, gradual, and loving labor.
