AFTER MARÍA: THE TWO SHORES by Sonia Fritz

Bronx Film Wednesdays – Independent films you will love.

Filmmaker Sonia Fritz’s documentary Después de María: Las 2 orillas (After María: The Two Shores) is a hopeful look at Puerto Rico eight months after the devastation of Hurricane María. It documents grassroots and cooperative recovery initiatives around the island, including a community diner in Caguas, the rescue of fish traps in Naguabo, a hydroponics farm in Lares, and Museo de las Américas’ multidisciplinary arts project Catharsis: re/constructing after María in San Juan. The film also tells the stories of families that were split by emigration to places like Orlando, Florida, and how the diaspora was positioned as a fundamental resource for reconstruction on the island after the storm.

“I was surprised to see how closely knit the two communities were, and how the family ties extended to include educational, economic,” says the filmmaker. “To make this documentary was to recover hope in the people of this country, and recover it thanks to all the people and projects that appear in front of camera and tell us their stories. They are little shards of life eight months after María. ”

Sonia Fritz is an award-winning Mexican filmmaker and longtime resident of Puerto Rico, with a body of work that smartly addresses issues of gender, migration, culture, and the environment. She began her filmmaking career at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and later earned her MFA in visual arts from the Vermont College of Norwich University. Sonia is Professor of Literature and Cinema Studies at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in Santurce. She has directed and produced numerous documentary and fiction films, including Mona, tesoro del Caribe (2017), 15 Lighthouses of Puerto Rico (2015), América (2011), El beso que me diste (2000), and Luis Capetillo: Pasión de justicia (1995). Sonia is also a co-director of acclaimed PBS series Latin Americans, winner of both the Peabody and Imagen Awards.
