The second title in our new series

UNSETTLED ACCOUNTS

Featuring: Carlos Weber
Directed by Arleen Cruz-Alicea
Carlos Weber, a Chilean journalist jailed and tortured in the hours following the Sept. 11, 1973, coup that brought Augusto Pinochet to power, opens up about the experience in a new documentary by Puerto Rican filmmaker Arleen Cruz-Alicea. “Memory is important, because it is in the face of memory that we can know the whole truth,” says Weber. Then 19 and living in the Chilean city of Coronel, he was a loyal supporter of Socialist President Allende, who took his own life as soldiers stormed the presidential palace on that fateful Sept. 11. The very day of the coup, troops grabbed Weber, beat him and threw him in prison “solely for having different ideals.”

MARY AND MAX

Featuring: Eric Bana, Toni Collette, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Barry Humphries and Bethany Whitmore
Directed by Adam Elliot
This unforgettable full-length claymation skillfully highlights the power of human connection to colour lives in a bleak-seeming world. Neglected by her alcoholic mother, eight-year-old Mary Daisy Dinkle from Melbourne is desperate for company. Picking a name at random from a directory, she becomes unlikely pen pals with Max Jeremy Horowitz – a depressed, obese forty-four-year-old who lives alone in New York and has Asperger’s Syndrome (a form of autism that can affect social interaction). A touching, intensely witty correspondence of twenty years ensues.
The film will be accompanied by a selection of the best stop motion short films from our 21 Islands International Short Film Festival:
