ABOUT The concert
Conductor and pianist Pablo Zinger will lead musicians from the Bronx Arts Ensemble (BAE) in a program of his original arrangements of old and new tangos on Saturday, March 25 at 8 pm. The program features BAE vocalists Leonardo Granados and Diana López, and 2016 BAE Young Artist competition winner Linda Collazo. BAE flutist Theresa Norris, violinist Jorge Avila, and cellist Eliana Mendoza will accompany the vocalists.

Artists
Multi-talented conductor, musical director, pianist, lecturer and arranger PABLO ZINGER has been called this country’s “King of Zarzuela” by Opera News, and we happily welcome him back this season to the BAE, where he presented notable performances with the Ensemble of El Amor Brujo and El retablo de maese Pedro (de Falla) as well as the tango opera Marta Gruni (Jaurés Lamarque Pons). Mr. Zinger is a native of Uruguay, and since coming to the United States in 1976 has worked widely in theatre, opera and the concert hall. His many recordings include the 2001 Grammy-award nominated album The Clarinetist with Paquito D’Rivera, as well as several notable CDs with the Bronx Arts Ensemble of chamber music of Carlos Surinach. Mr. Zinger has presented with Repertorio Español in New York such zarzuelas as Doña Francisquita, Luisa Fernanda, La corte de Faraón and La vida breve. A specialist in the music of Astor Piazzolla, Mr. Zinger tours and records with the Nuevo Tango Zinger Septet, and he has conducted the Costa Rico National Symphony, Simon Bolivar Orchestra of Venezuela and the Montevideo Philharmonic, as well as the Bronx Arts Ensemble.
Flutist THERESA NORRIS is an active orchestral and chamber musician in New York City and the surrounding area. She began her musical career in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan where she performed with the Detroit Symphony and the Michigan Opera Theatre while studying flute performance at Wayne State University. Currently Theresa teaches flute at the Kent Place School in Summit New Jersey and often races to Broadway for an evening of Phantom of the Opera. She has performed with the Orchestra of St. Lukes, the Stamford Symphony, the Westfield Symphony, the Center for Contemporary Opera and the Long Island Philharmonic. She has been performing with the Bronx Arts Ensemble for over twenty years.
Violinist JORGE ÁVILA has won attention as an outstanding performer through numerous appearances as soloist, recitalist, concertmaster and chamber musician. An Artist Performer with the Bronx Arts Ensemble, Jorge has appeared as soloist with the Ridgefield Symphony, Colonial Symphony, New Amsterdam Symphony and Riverside Orchestra, and has performed as concertmaster with the Stamford Symphony, Greenwich Symphony, Oratorio Society of New York, Musica Sacra, Jose Limon Dance Company and Gotham Opera Orchestra. On Broadway he has performed in such productions as Wicked, South Pacific and West Side Story, and with suchchamber ensembles as Simon String Quartet, Abaca String Band, Prism Ensemble and Musicians’ Accord. A native of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Jorge began his violin studies at age 14. In New York, he received both his Bachelor of Music and Professional Studies diplomas at the Mannes College of Music. Major teachers included Jorge Corpus, David Nadien, Charles Castleman and Jose Chain-Barbot. Jorge has recorded for the Naxos, Nonesuch Records and Centaur labels. His Carnegie Hall Concerto debut with the DCINY orchestra was in 2012, and recent performances include the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Ridgefield Symphony in 2011.
Cellist ELIANA MENDOZA has been a member of the Westchester Philharmonic for over 15 years, and she has performed extensively as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player throughout the New York area. She made her 1991 solo debut at Weill Recital Hall as a prizewinner of the Artists’ International Competition, and she has appeared in over 50 concerts performing the Paganini-Lloyd Webber Variations. A long-time member of the American Symphony and American Composers Orchestra, she has recorded for movie soundtracks and commercials, and is a member of the orchestra for “The Lion King” on Broadway. Ms. Mendoza’s recordings of chamber music are for the labels of New World Records, Soundspell Productions and Centaur Records.
