We do so in the interest of everyone’s safety and in an effort to help New York City mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Hommy Ramos and the Trombeatz – A Caribbean Thing
Led by Hommy Ramos, with percussionist and co-director Nelson Bello, Trombeatz is a dynamic, cutting edge and totally unique Caribbean jazz ensemble. Their debut album, A Caribbean Thing, was released to great acclaim under Truth Revolution Recording Collective in 2019. The group has performed in Puerto Rico and throughout the eastern U.S., and is known for its high energy and melodic skill. Hommy’s many credits include projects and performances with Andy Montañez, William Cepeda, Johnny Rivera, Danilo Pérez, Giovanny Hidalgo, Paquito D’Rivera, Timbalaye, and Tego Calderón. Nelson’s equally impressive dossier features work with Andy González, Cheo Feliciano, Ismael Miranda, Tony Vega, Charles Flores, and Zaccai.
Trombeatz concept is at once soulful and sophisticated. I love the way they utilize the trombone in their ensemble. Their new recording, ‘A Caribbean Thing’, reflects a deep understanding of the Latin Jazz tradition, while taking the music somewhere fresh. I’m a Trombeatz fan for sure! About the Record:
Musical Director Hommy Ramos says, “A Caribbean Thing is an invitation to the Caribbean experience through music. The title invites you to want to know more about the Caribbean as a geographic region: its culture and the music.”
HOMMY RAMOS – A Puerto Rican composer, arranger and educator, he began musical studies at the Escuela Libre de Música in San Juan. In his junior year of high school, he earned a scholarship to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he earned the Bachelor’s Degree. He received his Masters Degree from Queens College. Credits include Latin music greats Roberto Roena, Humberto Ramírez, Tego Calderón, Andy Montañez, Danilo Pérez, Giovanny Hidalgo, John Benítez, Paquito d’Rivera, and The Ray Charles Tribute Band. His first album, Trombeatz – A Caribbean Thing, was released in spring 2019 to great acclaim. He is a member of Los Pleneros de la 21, Timbalaye, Eddie Montalvo Orchestra, Steven Oquendo Orchestra, and the Mood Society Collective.
NELSON BELLO is the band’s primary percussionist and conga player. Ramos and Bello met while working together in different Latin bands during Ramos’ studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston. At that time, neither man knew that a common thread between them was their shared connection to both pianist Zaccai Curtis and bassist Luques Curtis, better known to many as The Curtis Brothers, and core creators of what is now Truth Revolution Recording Collective.
JOEL MATEO is a Puerto Rican drummer based in New York City. Ramos and Mateo have performed together with several artists of great caliber, in addition to shared appearances on recordings with Truth Revolution Recording Collective Artists over the years.
