Pregones/PRTT presents the 9th Edition of its 21 Islands International Short Film Fest as a FREE ONLINE STREAMING event, January 17 – February 2, 2025.

Selected from thousands of multilingual submissions originating in hundreds of qualifying locations worldwide, 21 Islands ISFF finalists compete for both Festival Jury Prizes and Audience Choice Awards.

1. TO ESTEBAN
Cuba – 17 Min.

Gregorio, Dolores and Zoila are three elders excited about the arrival of a new member to the family; Esteban, their great-grandson. They search through their belongings for a special gift to leave to a future Esteban, who may never know them as an adult.

2. KITE & I
Sagar Island, India – 6 Min.

Childhood, a pivotal phase for every child, is unfortunately elusive for many. Despite our purportedly egalitarian society, we encountered poignant stories of individuals in our midst, and “KITE & I” narrates one such life.

3. PANGGO
Malaysia – 4 Min.
Director: NUR QISTINA MADIHAH KAMARUL ISAM

The story of a yellow-crested cockatoo named Panggo, who is waiting for its owner to come home. Despite being chained to its perch, Panggo tries to escape from home to find its owner.

4. THE WANDERING ISLAND
Canary Islands – 18 Min.
Director: Pablo Borges

Federico and Carlos, grandfather and grandson, live together on a small banana farm. The banana business is becoming unsustainable. Unaware of the family’s economic situation, Carlos is only tormented by the reasons behind the absence of his father.

5. THE TASTE
Taiwan – 4:00 Min.
Director: HSUEH TSAI-JUNG KAO

The creator, recalling the scent and image of their mother through the familiar smells of home, evokes the atmosphere and associations of family.

6. GUARDIAN OF THE SEA LIONS
New Zealand – 4:00 Min.
Director: Stephanie Guest & Shania Riethmann

A film centered around Janet Ledingham, an 83 year-old woman who voluntarily collects data on sea lions, a nationally vulnerable species, for the New Zealand Sea Lion Trust.

7. TOMORROW ISN’T PROMISED
United Kingdom – 2:00 Min.
Director: Marryam Khan

A woman struggling to find her way to success, trying to fight with fear, mainly fear of the unknown.

8. FLOATING IN THE NIGHT
Taiwan – 4:00 Min.
Director: Yu Jou Liu

Set in a Keelung bar, our protagonist is a bartender who remains a silent companion, serving those who have arrived at the end of their journeys. Years of tending to these souls have blurred her own sense of self, leaving her silhouette in obscurity.
A special fate is intertwined in a specific time and space. The protagonist encounters an unexpected misunderstanding or lie, which gives her the opportunity to recognize herself. It also affects her actions later on.

1. CUBAN BEES: THE ORGANIC REVOLUTION
Cuba – 19 Min.

Cuban beekeepers are committed to organic and sustainable apiculture, avoiding chemical contaminants. This brings huge benefits to the island’s bee population and contributes to the overall well-being of the ecosystem.

2. MYTH OF THE CAVE
United Kingdom – 4:00 Min.
Director: Corin Astles

A child enters a cave to complete a sacred ritual and must learn to face the shadows that lie within.

3. BENDEN SANA (OVER TO YOU)
Islas Baleares – 7:30 Min.
Director: Tao Farren-Hefer

A tale of the Black sea, set in the small coastal town of Gerze, Turkey. We are allowed an intimate view into the life of old Aunty Ilknur, a strong force in her community, and learn about the resilience of the villagers against callous industrialists. Can they save their sea from the big companies?

4. GONDANG KELI
Indonesia – 4:00 Min.
Director: Moch Alvi

In the Lengger tradition of Wonosobo, Central Java, Indonesia. There is a traditional song or poem titled “Gondang Keli” which tells the story of a mother’s deep sorrow over the loss of her beloved husband.

5. MAGICK
Australia – 9:41 Min.
Director: Georgiy Margvelashvili

Magick is a short pilgrimage through a strange fictional world.

6. ISLAND WITH NO ROOF
Islas Baleares – 7:00 Min.
Director: Sebastian Feldman

Emilio, a newly graduated civil guard, arrives in Ibiza to carry out his training. However, he faces a crisis that crushes him. Finding himself trapped in a conflict that challenges his principles and reality, oscillating between duty and disillusionment with the same system that he must protect.

7. TRANSLUCENT GLASS
Philippines – 5:30 Min.
Director: Alyssa Kaye Ife Ras

The story revolves around influencer @lizzz250 who is met with an uncertain situation and her desperate attempt to increase her social media presence by following her viewers requests.

8. ESSENCE
Taiwan – 5:40 Min.
Director: Wan-Yu Hung

From emptiness, a gentle breeze stirs, gathering grasses and leaves to form a creature. As It catches sight of itself, the world echoes into being, stirred by the wind. Feeling others, It is felt in return, in a rhythm where all boundaries blur into a seamless dance of harmony.

9. POR UMA NOITE
Ireland – 12:00 Min.
Director: Ha Trang Tran

A family piques a pregnant waitress’s interest when they walk into her restaurant. She then goes on a journey exploring the intersections between motherhood, longing, and culture.

Indonesia – 5:00 Min.

On a sunny morning in Jakarta, Indonesia, sisters Beth and Liz become fierce rivals in their race to the bathroom. But what starts as a rivalry takes an unexpected turn.

11. LAYING & LYING

In the Canary Islands there is a town called Costablanca. This place is desperate, mired in poverty and filth. A cry of desperation is trying to give a voice to these humble people. Only the truth from a man can change things.

Trinidad & Tobago – 1:30 Min.

An animated short that traces the steelpan’s evolution from its African drum origins, through its ban, to its rise as a symbol of resilience & Caribbean cultural pride—a simple account of a complex journey of resistance.

When an elderly lady tries speed dating it leads to a night with a charming stranger and a heartbreaking revelation.

1. THE FOREST OF THE HONEY BEES
Ushant Island, France – 20:00 Min.
Director: ERWAN LE GAL

Isabelle is a violinist-beekeeper in the Ouessant island. She protects her bees and she inspires her daughter with stories and legends about honey bees.

2. MYSTERIOUS CRAB BAIT THIEVES
Australia – 6:30 Min.
Director: Axel Grossmann, Megan Diment

In the episode *”The Mysterious Crab Bait Thieves 🦀,”* wildlife photographer and crab fisherman Rodney Peterson discovers that thieves are raiding his crab pots. The team investigates and uncovers a groundbreaking behavior, documenting a world-first discovery that surprises even the researchers.

3. PLANETS ALIGNED
United Kingdom – 3:00 Min.
Director: Liv Berry

The sun holds a group therapy meeting for the planets to talk about their well being. They get distracted by each other’s chaotic characteristics.

4. FOREVER
Australia – 1:30 Min.
Director: John M Engledew

This short film traces how the life of a solitary robot worker changes as he meets the love of his life, resulting in a significant shift in his perspective.

5. RAIZAL: THE JAMAICAN CONNECTION
Jamaica – 20:00 Min.
Director: JAMAR Romaine, Alston CLEARLY

This award winning documentary focuses on a group of Afro-Caribbean-Latino individuals living on the Colombian-owned island of San Andrés. Known as the Raizals, this community has strong Jamaican heritage, which plays a significant role in shaping their identity and culture.

6. TOUR
Canary Islands – 1:30 Min.
Directors: Fátima Luzardo

A collage-style found footage piece designed to provoke reflection on certain ills of the world. By using counterpoint, it creates a sense of estrangement that compels us to rethink and re-engage with the relentless flow of horrific images we encounter daily.

7. A FAREWELL LETTER
United Kingdom – 10:00 Min.
Director: Elkie Herhberg

Anna (12) and her mother (40) arrive in a gloomy ultra-Orthodox neighborhood on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Anna, who brought a pair of bicycles with her, soon discovers that it is forbidden for girls to ride there.

8. THE ISLAND
Islas baleares – 5:00 Min.
Director: MAHMUT TAŞ

Ada is a little girl living in a dry village that hasn’t rained in a long time. Ada’s family is considering leaving the village if the thirst continues. Ada’s upset about this and decides to tell us about her village with her camera. She goes to a lake that used to be full of water and named after her.

9. CHǍOMIÀN
Indonesia – 4:30 Min.
Director: Nicholas Sanjaya

In Chinese tradition, when one is in mourning, it is forbidden to eat noodles for a month. Alung is reminded by his brother not to eat noodles for a month, then a commotion occurs when Alung is forced to eat noodles by his boss. Will Alung eat the noodles?

10. LA MEMORIA DE LAS COSAS
Puerto Rico – 18:00 Min.
Director: Karen Rossi

A documentary that reveals the subtle poetry of the souls of the storytellers and the reconstruction of the roof of their home, a space filled with individual and shared memories.

1. EYE OF WATER
Canary Islands – 7:00 Min.

The first swim in a river, the lush vegetation, the sounds of the night, the force with which water is born from a rock. All that the eye is able to keep after venturing to look for the first time at the natural beauty of an unknown island that is a mirror of your house.

2. CHASING THE BREEZE

Kitesurfing — for most, just another sport, but for Steve and Kenno, it’s a way of life.

On Halloween night, Caro boards her sister Jess’s cheap car. Believing they’re headed for the same destination, instead the two sisters take the path of confession.

Amid a post-apocalypse, the fragile relationship between a girl and her pet bunny is at risk when she is drawn toward a certain gacha game.

5. PANAGSANA (SALT-MAKING)
Philippines – 6:30 Min.
Director: Edmar Miguel Delos Santos

Melba, a traditional salt maker from Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, struggles to sustain their heirloom craft due to the effects of climate change. The salt-making process, which relies heavily on dry weather, is threatened by increasingly unpredictable weather patterns in the Philippines, putting their tradition at risk.

6. THE ʻĀINA WITHIN
Hawaii – 6 Min.

A meditative piece of three kamaʻāina from Oʻahu gathering in Honolulu to reflect on what makes them proud of their home.

Elionor discovers the intricacies of adulthood in 1940’s Mallorca. She lives in a remote farmhouse, from which the inhabitants have never ventured out. Everything will change with the arrival of a movie.

2. THE BEAST OF DREAM
Taiwan – 3:30 Min.
Director: Althea Huang

Even the dream maker cannot chain its wildness for dreams. Dreams are wild, untamed reflections of our inner chaos—savage and uncontrollable. Dare to walk among the dreams, embrace their raw energy, and let them transform you into the beast of dreams.

ART: By Any Means Necessary follows the resistance of two art institutions in the Caribbean: one closed but squatted by artists, the other fighting to stay open. Against the backdrop of political strife, Haitian and Guadeloupean artists grapple with the concept of freedom in their battle to preserve their spaces.

4. THE SILENT ROUTE
United Kingdom – 8:30 Min.

During the war, a young woman was struggling to cross the border with her newborn baby and three elderly relatives. While their minds were obsessed with the possibility of being apprehended by the enemy, the magic of humanity brought out something unexpected.

5. THE FALSE REALITY OF MANOLO LÁZARO

Director: Mateo Formoso-DeLucia

Manolo Lázaro tells the story of his family’s departure from Cuba while experiencing censorship from the Cuban government during the Patría y Vida protests of 2021.

Hwa the kind cactus led three adorable ducks searching for water in the desert; however, these wild strangers almost drove him mad!

An uneventful afternoon after school, two boys play a game of poker. But a brief moment of inadvertent physical touch and eye contact stirs something unexpected in one of them.

A heartfelt story of unrequited love explored through a lonely seagull struggling to accept that his newfound object of affection is a human-operated drone with a limited battery life.

Luisa Capetillo, a fearless and progressive Puerto Rican activist, confronts her boss at a tobacco factory, demanding the right to read news articles about women’s rights to the female workers.
